OpenAI Points to Summer 2024 Release Date for GPT-5

Sources have said OpenAI is targeting a mid-2024 release date for its next major AI model, likely called GPT-5. This would follow last year’s GPT-4 and serve as an upgraded ChatGPT expected to launch by the projected gpt-5 release date with better performance.

Two anonymous sources revealed that OpenAI has recently given some enterprise customers previews of GPT-5 and enhancements to ChatGPT. One CEO described GPT-5 as “really good” and hinted at new automated capabilities for launching AI agents to perform tasks.

When asked, OpenAI representatives declined to confirm a release date. However, OpenAI representatives pointed to a recent comment from CEO Sam Altman. In his podcast appearance, Altman implied an amazing new model could launch this year without confirming if it was GPT-5.

Altman noted the company will release “in the coming months many different things” before discussing a potential model at GPT-5’s level or above. This seems to suggest GPT-5 or an equivalent is likely already in testing internally.

Many expect GPT-5, like its predecessors, to be a multimodal large language model that can process both text and visual inputs. If able to improve task generalization while reducing “hallucinations,” it could signify noteworthy progress versus GPT-4 Turbo released last fall.

People believe that training for GPT-5 is now complete, and OpenAI is currently conducting internal safety testing and “red teaming” on the model before a potential public launch. The timeline could shift based on testing duration.
