Alibaba Expands Trading Reach to Tunisia

Global e-commerce leader Alibaba is strengthening its presence in Tunisia through the launch of a training initiative with a local university. Called the Global Digital Talent Program (GDT), it aims to help more Tunisian exporters sell on Alibaba.com, the world’s largest B2B marketplace.

The program involves Alibaba partnering directly with a Tunisian private university to provide digital skills training. According to Sami Tounsi, Alibaba’s regional partner and founder of platform Sésame, this will allow Tunisian companies to access lucrative international markets, particularly China.

Upon completing the GDT, exporters will be able to list their products on Alibaba.com and showcase them to the platform’s network of 50 million global buyers.

Sami Tounsi notes this will facilitate the digital transition of Tunisian exporters and enable them to enter global trade by tapping Alibaba.com’s vast buyer base.

Companies will then have opportunities to expand sales further across other sites in Alibaba’s expansive ecommerce empire, such as AliExpress with its billion daily users. While the current foreign exchange law poses challenges, Tounsi sees potential in diversifying Tunisian exports via major platforms.

Mahmoud Bach Bawab of Alibaba.com also highlighted efforts to boost Tunisia’s digital trade sector profile through partnerships with key local organizations. The new initiative demonstrates Alibaba’s growing interest in Tunisia’s market potential.
